Chapter 2 Response

Example 1:

Genre/tone: Texting my mom. Respectful tone, but to the point.

Audience: My mother. She is my elder, but also someone I need to be straight-forward with.

Purpose: In my rhetorical situation, I text her to ask for her credit card so I can pay for an upcoming doctor’s appointment. My goal is to ask nicely and respectfully for her money to pay for my doctors. I put heart emojis in the texts to lighten the mood.

Stance: I am a little uneasy towards this topic. It’s her credit card. My own expenses. I want her to feel okay about letting me use her credit card. I’ll pay her back one day!

Context: My parents don’t like lending me money. It’s not an ideal situation to them. I should be making money on my own, out on my own. But I’m not. So asking for it is slightly uncomfortable. But I am their daughter, and they have that base-line parental responsibility. I love my parents.

Medium and Design: It’s a text message, so I have a lot of freedom. I need to be serious however because it’s an important topic. I should include emojis to make it a little more light-hearted however. It’s my mom, I love her but she’s(and my dad) paying for my medical expenses right now.

Example 2:

Genre/tone: Writing poetry/song lyrics. So it’s very expressive.

Audience: No audience, except myself. It’s a very freeing past-time.

Purpose: My motivation is to express my truest thoughts and feelings. I find it’s much easier to do in a more ‘laid-back’ manner. I.e: through music.

Stance: Most often, I get deep into my feelings. So I’m really sad or really angry. I think I convey that in my poetry/songs.

Context: I have no constraints except the ones that I place upon myself. It’s a freeing past-time, but I am still my biggest critic, so I find myself holding back somewhat.

Medium and Design: Potentially, there is nothing I can’t do with this genre. I hand-write these (poems/lyrics) in a notebook. Sometimes I doodle on the pages when I can’t write.

Example 3:

Genre/tone: Writing work in-class with a team. A more discussion-based tone. More inclusive over-all.

Audience: Our classmates. Who are very similar to us and also very different. We want our audience to be interested by what we have to say.

Purpose: To share our thoughts and ideas with the class.

Stance: We are interested in our topics and want our thoughts and ideas to be taken seriously and into consideration by our fellow classmates.

Context: We discuss and ask each other what the other thinks. It’s a very inclusive writing-process which is very satisfying, at least to me. It means that we’re all getting to say what we want to say. I think we’re shy though, so it’s hard to get our truest thoughts and ideas out there just now.

Medium and Design: Our medium is the blog. We have a lot of freedom here. We have the potential to add visuals, but so far it hasn’t been necessary. It’s a pretty casual way to post writing, so (so far) we haven’t had to write with specific writing conventions (i.e: formal essay, research writing.)
